Fleming Island Finally Has a Brunch Bar. Here's How It Fits Into Your Weekends Through Christmas.

Grumpy's opened its doors today on the corner of East-West Parkway and U.S. 17, where Dick's Wings used to be. The grand opening was set for 5:30 a.m. on Monday, October 12, after a two-day soft opening that ran 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, according to Clay Today. It's the newest piece of a fall calendar on Fleming Island that runs almost entirely in daylight. The busiest dates between now and Christmas are a breakfast room that closes at 2 p.m., a market that wraps up at the same hour, and a veterans' festival that starts at noon.

That makes planning simple. If you want a full Saturday on the island this season, start early. And mark two specific Saturdays plus one December evening.

A Breakfast Room for 190 That Closes at 2 P.M.

Grumpy's has a following in Clay County. Its Orange Park and Middleburg restaurants have been voted Best of Clay for breakfast and brunch eight years running, and the brand has won Bold City Best in Jacksonville nine years in a row, Clay Today reported in September. The father-and-son owners, Dell Hoard Sr. and Jr., also own the Middleburg store. They spent all summer remodeling the old wing restaurant, and the opening date slipped several times from an early-summer target.

The Fleming Island store is built differently from the others. It has 17 tables and 13 booths in the main room, plus a party room for 20 to 30 people and a game room where kids play for free. It also has a full bar. The other locations seat 107. Counting the party room, this one can hold roughly 170 to 190. Even the restrooms grew, from one stall each at the older stores to four each here.

Hoard Jr. told Clay Today:

"We're still going to close at 2 p.m. We'll be selling a lot of specialty drinks like Mimosas and Bloody Marys."

He also said the owners expect the party room to be full on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. They're hoping church groups, car clubs and other groups book morning get-togethers there. So the island's first full-bar brunch room is designed around weekend mornings. If your soccer parents, book club or neighborhood crew has been driving to Orange Park for a group breakfast, the party room is the space to ask about.

The Florida Times-Union also covered the October 12 opening and lists the address as 1803 East-West Parkway, which matches the restaurant's own site. We haven't found regular weekly hours beyond the 2 p.m. close, so check with the restaurant before making a weekday plan.

November 7 Packs Three Daytime Draws Into One Saturday

That 2 p.m. close lines up with the island's other big daytime event. The Fleming Island Saturday Market runs on the first Saturday of each month, 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Village Square Shopping Center, 2245 Plantation Center Drive. The Fun 4 Clay Kids listing says admission is free and describes many vendors, local food and a bounce house.

The first Saturday in November is November 7. On the market's monthly schedule, that puts it on the same day as Corks & Barrels' 4th annual VETFest at 1824 Town Center Boulevard, Unit 101. Explore Clay lists the festival from noon to 6 p.m. and says proceeds benefit local veterans. A page linked from the organizer gives two end times, 6 p.m. in one place and 8 p.m. in another, and says ticket details are still to come. Check the time again closer to the date.

Here's how the day can fit together:

  1. Get to Grumpy's early for breakfast, before the 2 p.m. close.
  2. Head to the market at Village Square, which runs 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  3. Drive over to Town Center Boulevard for VETFest, which starts at noon.

All three stops are on Fleming Island. One caveat on the market date: November 7 comes from the market's first-Saturday pattern. We didn't find a separate November listing. December 5, by contrast, is listed.

The Roundabout Behind Town Center Is Still a Work Zone

That drive to VETFest passes the island's biggest active construction project. Clay County started building a new two-lane road on April 6 that links Radar Road to Town Center Boulevard at the existing roundabout. When it's finished, it will give drivers a full connection from U.S. 17 to Town Center Boulevard, with bike lanes, curbs, gutters and drainage improvements.

The project has changed how people get into one familiar park. On April 12, crews closed vehicle access to Thunderbolt Park. The county set up a crosswalk from the Fleming Island Library parking lot to the park entrance for people on foot and asks walkers to watch for heavy equipment while crossing. If a fall weekend includes a stop at Thunderbolt Park, plan on parking at the library and walking across.

The schedule has improved. In June and July, the county's road projects page put substantial completion in June 2027. The September 23 update says the work is about 40% complete, isn't affecting traffic right now, and is expected to wrap up in March 2027. That would make the new U.S. 17 link ready for spring 2027, about three months earlier than the county's previous estimate.

After Dark, the Calendar Thins Out

Daytime events dominate the island's calendar, and only one major evening event happens on Fleming Island itself before the end of the year. For December evenings, you'll mostly be looking a few miles south.

Date Event Where Hours
Sat., Nov. 7 Fleming Island Saturday Market Village Square, 2245 Plantation Center Dr. 9:30 a.m.–2 p.m.
Sat., Nov. 7 4th annual VETFest Corks & Barrels, 1824 Town Center Blvd. Starts at noon
Sat., Dec. 5 Fleming Island Saturday Market Village Square, 2245 Plantation Center Dr. 9:30 a.m.–2 p.m.
Sat., Dec. 5 Christmas on Walnut Street Festival and parade Spring Park, Green Cove Springs 10 a.m.–9 p.m.
Sat., Dec. 19 Whitey's 2026 Christmas Boat Parade Whitey's Fish Camp, 2032 County Road 220 6 p.m.

On December 5, the market and the Christmas on Walnut Street Festival overlap from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The festival is free and includes vendors, Santa, music, a tree lighting and a parade along Highway 17, according to Explore Clay's listing. You can do the market in the morning and head to Green Cove Springs in the evening for the tree lighting.

Whitey's Christmas Boat Parade on December 19 is the one big evening event on the island this season. Explore Clay lists it for 6 p.m. at Whitey's Fish Camp, and the route and viewing details haven't been posted yet. Last year's parade also started at 6 p.m., on December 13, 2025, according to Action News Jax's holiday parade roundup.

What's Still in Build-Out

The next round of openings won't change that daytime pattern. They're mostly quick errands and treats, and none has a confirmed opening date.

  • Whit's Frozen Custard is moving into 1545 County Road 220, the old Mathnasium unit next to O'Reilly. Mathnasium has moved to 1524 County Road 220. The custard shop was still under construction with no official opening date as of Clay Today's October 8 report.
  • Sun and Steam Seafood Pots is building out on Village Square Parkway. In July, equipment was arriving and interior work was underway.
  • Wawa is planned for 2357 Village Square Parkway with eight pumps and 16 fueling positions, and Five Below was hiring for a store at 1991 East-West Parkway, according to Clay Today's July roundup.
  • Parker's Kitchen is planned at U.S. 17 and Creighton Road near Sunset Tiki Bar, WhatNow reported in March. No opening date has been announced.

One storefront went the other way this year. Island Wing Company closed for good at 1609 County Road 220 after 15 months. As of June, no replacement had been announced.

The longest-term project is outdoors. In March, Clay County announced plans for a five-segment public boardwalk at Moccasin Slough Park, aimed at opening the 255-acre wetland for recreation while protecting the waterfront. A $400,000 matching grant covers the first segments, and another $750,000 appropriation was under consideration. The county hasn't published a construction timeline yet.

If you're getting ready to sell a Fleming Island home this winter, a new breakfast spot, the Saturday market or the new road link to Town Center can all be part of how a listing describes the neighborhood.
